During BlizzCon, Blizzard officially announced a remake of Diablo 2. And in the course of subsequent panels and interviews, told a number of details about the coming Diablo 2: Resurrected. And, in particular, confirmed that the release of the updated version will not affect the original one, as it happened with Warcraft 3: Reforged.
Although the remake is created based on the original Diablo 2 code, everything else these will be two separate and standalone games. This, in particular, will affect the policy regarding custom modifications: there will be no new restrictions in the old version.
For a number of years, many thought that the chances of a Diablo 2 remaster are small. In particular, this was doubted by David Brevik, author of the idea and Diablo‘s chief programmer.
One reason cited the loss of the original assets of the game and critical damage to the source code. As it turned out, the fears were exaggerated.
A lot of data has indeed been lost irretrievably. But the developers used all the possibilities and sources to get back everything they can.
For this, we should thank Andre Abrahamyan, a stunning designer from Blizzard who worked with us. He would just walk up to the developer tables and ask, “Hey, do you have anything left? “.
So we got not only the source code, but also a lot of other resources. When you watch the video with the wings of Tirael in HD, then you see the original model of the original wings of Tirael.
And this is only one of the few assets that managed to find and use. BlizzardSometimes designers had to resort to unusual sources.
For example, 3D models of market stalls in Lut Golein were once used for advertising posters. In the original Diablo 2 they were converted into two-dimensional sprites, but Blizzard was able to recover 3D files.
However, even the loss of everything would not be crushing when working on Resurrected, because most assets redrew from scratch. But players will be able to switch between updated and original graphics.
Critical could be the loss of source code — but this did not happen. After all, the original Diablo 2 still gets patches.
And the features and imperfections of old code retain the sense of reliability that Diablo fans will feel 2. Recall that Diablo 2: Resurrected will be released this year on PC, Xbox Series, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.
