Things are getting worse with former Georgia President Mikhail Saakashvili, says his doctor on TV. The former leader has been in jail for ten days and is on a hunger strike as many days.
“His condition has worsened, he has trouble talking and walking,” explained doctor Nikoloz Kipshidze on Mtavari Arkhi TV. He is going to ask the authorities to transfer Saakashvili to a hospital.
Saakashvili has been sentenced in absentia to six years in prison for abuse of power. He himself denies these allegations, which he believes are politically motivated.
The 53-year-old former president recently returned to Georgia and was immediately apprehended. He hoped to guide his opposition party to the win in local elections. That does not seem to have succeeded for the time being; the ruling party has received a lot more votes than the opposition. But in the six largest cities, there will be a second round of votes.
Over the past few years, Saakashvili has spent abroad. Among other things in the Netherlands – his wife Sandra Roelofs comes from Terneuzen – but especially in Ukraine.
