Doctor Navalny punished by Russian judge for ‘violated corona rules’

Anastasia Vasiljeva has been granted freedom restrictions for a year by a Russian judge because she allegedly broke coronavirus rules. She has regularly treated Kremlin critic Aleksey Navalny as a physician in the past and is also critical of President Vladimir Putin herself.

Vasiljeva was sentenced for calling on people to participate in demonstrations against Navalny pinning last year. The authorities had banned these types of meetings due to the current corona rules. Vasiljeva was not Navalnys only ally charged for this. She called the persecution politically motivated.

The doctor is not allowed to leave Moscow from the court. She must also be home at night and attending large gatherings is prohibited. Vasiljeva must report to a regulator twice a month.

Pending the trial, Vasiljeva has been under house arrest for a while. She is the top woman of a medical association who regularly criticises the coronavirus policy of the Russian government. Among other things, the organization raised alarm about protective equipment shortages for medical personnel during the corona crisis.
