Dozens dead in Taiwanese shopping and residential complex fire

A blazing fire in a shopping and residential complex in the Taiwanese city of Kaohsiung has at least 48 deaths. At least forty people were injured. At 3:00am local time, fire broke out in the thirteen-storey building.

The fire department says its an extremely fierce fire that has destroyed large parts of the property. Eyewitnesses report a nightexplosion.

The death toll may increase further as residents of the upper floors would have been trapped by the flames. The fire department is still looking for victims left behind in the complex.

It

was reported that emergency exits were blocked, hampering the firefighters in their rescue attempts. Shops and restaurants were housed in the lower six floors of the forty year old building. Up there were about 120 households.
