Violence in prisons in South American Ecuador has killed dozens. According to the authorities, at least 67 detainees were killed by riots in three prisons scattered across the country.
Criminal organisations would have struck several locations simultaneously in a coordinated action, according to the government. The background to the outbursts of violence is not yet known, but it was rather restless in the prisons due to confrontations between rival gangs. Police sent reinforcements to get the situation back under control.
Firearms, machetes, knives and cell phones were found in a prison. In response to the bloody violence, the President of Ecuador ordered the army to strictly control the smuggling of weapons, ammunition and explosives into prisons.
