According to the army, a double suicide attempt in the Iraqi capital Baghdad has killed at least 28 people. Another 73 people were injured by the explosions.
The attacks were carried out on a busy market in Tayaran Square, in the centre of Baghdad. According to an army spokesman, two bombed terrorists blew themselves up when they were pursued by police forces. Responsibility for the violence has not yet been claimed.
They are the first deadly suicide bombings in a long time in the Iraqi capital. The last time suicide bombers killed was in January 2018, also in Tayaran Square. Dozens of people were killed.
In the years before, Islamic State regularly committed attacks in Baghdad. The violence diminished after the terrorist organisation was largely expelled from Iraq.
