Riots in several prisons in Ecuador have killed at least 67 people. According to President Lenín Moreno, it was a coordinated action by criminal gangs. There would have been a conflict of power within the prison walls.
There were unrest in prisons in Guayaguil, Cuenca and Latacunga, where about 70 percent of the detainees are detained in the country. In the violence, police officers would have been wounded. Numbers have not been disclosed.
Hundreds of extra agents were deployed to restore peace to the prisons. During cell searches, firearms, machetes, knives and mobile phones were then seized.
President Moreno has ordered the military to curb the smuggling of weapons, ammunition and explosives into prisons.
