In the rubble of the partly collapsed apartment building near Miami Beach, the man and power sought survivors. Police say that up to 99 people are missing; its not clear if they were in the premises when it collapsed around 1:30 a.m. local time.
After the collapse, two people were taken to the hospital, one of whom died. Dozens of people were freed from the rubble in the morning. The Mayor of Surfside, where the collapse occurred, fears the death toll will still rise. He was told by the building manager that there were quite a lot of people in attendance.
The building, which was built in the early 80s, has around 130 homes. Images show that half of the property has been completely knocked away. The part still standing looks like a giant dollhouse, writes the US news agency AP.
These would be footage of the collapse captured by a surveillance camera in the area:
The search also includes dogs, but that hasnt yielded much, said Mayor Charles Burkett. He compared to a pile of pancakes to indicate that there is hardly any space between the debris. Rescue operations are also hampered by the risk of the rest of the building collapse as well.
The mayor did not want to speculate about a cause. “Work was carried out on the roof, but I dont expect the cause to be there. It looks like a bomb has exploded, but we assume thats not the case. There is obviously a construction error in the building, but its too early for conclusions.”
