In Nigeria, armed men kidnapped at least eighty school students and five school teachers. A teacher tells Reuters news agency that mostly female pupils were taken by a gang. The attack killed one cop, a student was injured.
The attack occurred in Birnin Yauri, northwest Nigeria. The kidnappers broke through the school fence and went straight to the classrooms to take students with them. According to police, a nearby forest is looking for kidnapped students and pupils.
A local school resident says it was a major chaos in the school grounds shortly after the attack. “We saw students cry, teachers cry, everyone was confused,” he says to Reuters.
Schoolchild abductions are not uncommon in Nigeria: it is the third major abduction case in northwest Nigeria in three weeks.
More than 800 Nigerian pupils have been kidnapped since December. Some have been freed or released, others are still missing. Armed gangs hope to get ransom in exchange for students.
