In battles between the Venezuelan army and armed Colombian groups, eight Venezuelan soldiers died on the Colombian border, reported the Ministry of Defence in the capital Caracas on Wednesday. This brings the number of deaths to sixteen since an offensive against the fighters started in March.
Since 21 March, skirmishes have been taking place with armed Colombian groups in the southwest of Venezuela on the Colombian border. Two days ago, the Ministry had reported fierce fighting involving a “significant number of” victims, including on the side of the armed gangs.
According to security sources in Colombia, these are dissidents from the former FARC guerrillas. Although most of the FARC have laid down arms, there are still ‘dissident’ factions that have not accepted the signed peace process of 2016.
