EK judo: Verkerk quickly ready at return, Meyer disappoints

Marhinde Verkerk is already disabled in the first round at the European Championships in Prague on Saturday. The Croatian Karla Prodan defeated the former European and world champion in the class up to 78 kilograms with a waza-ari.

Verkerk had not been in competitions for months because of the coronacrisis and a shoulder injury. In the same class also debutante Natascha Ausma was ready quickly. The 24-year-old Friezin lost on ippon to Russian Aleksandra Babintseva.

Another debutant, Simeon Catharina, came to only one performance in Prague. After a bye, the judoka from The Hague lost in the second round (ippon) to reigning European champion in the category -100 kg, the Russian Aman Adamian. Jesper Smink (-90 kg) lost in the first round on waza-ari to the Azerbaijan Mammadali Mehijev.

setback for Roy Meyer

For Roy Meyer, the European title battle turned out to be a disappointment. The Bredanaar lost, after a bye in the first round, at his first performance of Georgian Levani Matiashvili. Meyer is in a fierce battle with Henk Grol for one ticket in the class above 100 kilograms for the Olympic Games.

Van‘t End en Spijkers to quarter-finals

Noรซl van’t End and Jur Spijkers have reached the quarter-finals at the European Championships. Van‘t End was that as world champion in the class up to 90 kilograms at his stand, EK-Debutant Spijkers surprised at the heavyweights.

Van’t End had a bye in the first round and was too strong for the Czech Jiri Petr at his first performance. Spijkers replaces Grol, who was unable to participate in the European title battle due to corona contamination. In the first round the Tilburger was too strong for Marius Fizel from Slovakia. Then he reached the last eight at the expense of the Ukrainian Jakiv Chammo.
