Englishmen and universities want more diversity in higher education

Today, Minister Van Engelshoven, together with organisations in higher education, is coming up with an action plan to make universities more diverse. There are still too many white men working at the institutions at the moment, and they think it should be done differently.

Van Engelshoven said in the CCeit Radio 1 Journaal that “science is not always a safe working environment“. She pointed to “unpleasant incidents of harassment of female employees” and said that a more diverse working environment could help.

The minister agrees with the universities that there will be new targets this year for the number of female professors to work at universities in 2025. Furthermore, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen, KNAW) will issue an advisory report on the prevention of undesirable behaviour and intimidation in research.

The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) will make 12.5 million euros available from 2021 onwards for an ‘impulse programme’ aimed at Dutch researchers with a non-Western background and refugees.
