Excelsior wins after penalty kicks from MVV and continues to repents

Excelsior has reached the quarter-finals of the KNVB Cup. After 120 minutes it stood 2-2 against MVV, but in the penal series the number fifteen of the first division was just a little better.

Earlier this season MVV and Excelsior met in the competition, when the victory went to the Rotterdammers (2-0). Also in the eighth finals of the KNVB Cup, Excelsior came ahead against the club from Maastricht. Referee Pol van Boekel put the ball on the penaltydot after more than fifteen minutes of playing and Elías Ómarsson shot the 0-1 in an empty Stadion de Geusselt.

MVV takes initiative on

After the opening hit, MVV, the number seventeen of the first division, got more grip on the match. Joeri Schroijen saw his efforts barely rescued by goalkeeper Alessandro Damen, but a little later Damen had no answer to a handsome headball by Koen Kostons. At the start of rest, the home team also came ahead, thanks to a change of direction from Schroijen.

Excelsior after rest explicitly sought the attack and was close to the equalizer several times. Ómarsson saw his headball go straight past the target and a volley of Siebe Horemans ended up on the pole. From the corner that followed, Horemans left the 2-2.

Both teams did not score in the regular playing time, which extended thirty minutes. In the extension were by far the most opportunities for the Rotterdammers, but Excelsior failed to score. A series of penalties had to bring the decision to Maastricht.

After the first five penalties it was equal (4-4). Sander Fischer then shot for Excelsior, after which MVV captain Luc Mares shot the ball hard against the bar.
