Exhausted Van Vleuten falls silent in Giro and has to change bikes, but wins

Annemiek van Vleuten seized power after a bizarre conclusion in the second stage of the Giro Rosa. The world champion was alone in the lead, got tired of her bike on a steep gravel strip, but still won. Anna van der Breggen came second

The second stage in the longest and most important women’s stage race promised to be spectacular. In the 124.8 kilometres from Civitella Paganico to Arcidosso it was hardly a metre flat.

A closed peloton started the climb of the Seggiano of the second category in the final stage. Van Vleuten immediately gave the gas, left the rest behind and seemed on his way to victory. Behind that, Van der Breggen started the chase.
