Exorbitant prices rent up to 1000 euro in tires, free above

The cabinet will tackle exorbitant prices for rental houses up to around 1000 euros harder. Now rent protection only applies to social housing up to around 760 euros, but Minister De Jonge for Housing and Spatial Planning is going to raise this limit, he announced in a debate in the House of Representatives today.

In May, the minister came up with the plan to intervene in the free market for middle rent. The current housing shortage leads to extremely high rents that are no longer in proportion to the quality and size of the house. De Jonge believes that middle-income people fall between โ€œshore and shipโ€, because they earn too much for a social housing and have to pay sky-high prices in the free market.

In May, the minister was still thinking about rent protection between 1000 and 1250 euros. In recent months, this led to protest among some project developers, who, due to this uncertainty about the exact amount, wanted to temporarily stop their plans for the construction of rental properties. They were too uncertain whether construction projects provided sufficient money.

De Jonge understands this uncertainty and therefore already mentions the 1000 euro limit. In addition, landlords can therefore decide for themselves how much they charge for their home. โ€œThe investors have asked for certainty and that is right,โ€ said the minister. He also insists that these are uncertain times for project developers too, due to rapidly rising prices of building materials, higher interest rates and inflation.

De Jonge remains convinced that the government must intervene in part of the free market. โ€œIt affects property law, but on the other hand, the right to live. There are many reasons to protect tenants.โ€

In November, he will come up with a detailed plan and the exact amount of rent protection will be announced.
