A family from the U.S. state of Louisiana received $50 billion in their account earlier this month. For four days they were newcomers to the list of the 25 richest of the earth until the mistake had to be fixed.
47-year-old Darren James in conversation with Fox says that he was surprised by his wife on June 12, when she showed her bank balance to him. “We just thought, Whos at our door later? We dont know anyone with that much money.”
James, working as a broker, admits that he thought about passing the money for a while: “As long as the money was there, it felt great. Having so many zeros in your bank account is bizarre.”
Billionaire for four days
Darren James and his wife called the bank on Saturday, June 12 to present the situation. It wasnt until Tuesday that the money was debited again. “I was a billionaire for four days. It was a cool feeling even though we couldnt do anything with it.”
“We knew it wasnt ours, so we couldnt do anything with it. We couldnt spend it, that would be theft,” said James, who states that some 150 other American families had received an erroneous amount around the same time.
In conversation with Fox, a bank spokesperson says the company had to deal with a technical problem.
Julia Yonkowski, from Florida, recently had a similar situation: she found $1 billion in her bank account when she wanted to withdraw a substantially smaller amount. According to WFLA, her receipt said she had $999,985,85,94 in her account after she withdrawn $20.
