Daniil Medvedev has easily reached the quarter finals of the US Open. The Russian number three on the placing list won after just over an hour and a half from the American Frances Tiafoe: 6-4 6-1 6-0.
Medvedev reached the finals at last years Grand Lamb Tournament in New York. He lost to Rafael Nadal, who is absent this year.
Tiafoe, the number 82 in the world rankings, quickly fell behind in the first set, but made things difficult for Medvedev. In the second and third set, the 22-year-old American was not up to the Russian who is fifth in the ranking. On a 4-0 deficit in the second set, Tiafoe won another game, then Medvedev rushed on to victory.
In the quarterfinals Medvedev takes on his compatriot Andrej Roeblev.
The tenth-placed Roeblev eliminated Italian Matteo Berrettini in four sets: 4-6 6-3 6-3 6-3.
Roeblev also reached the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows in 2017. He was then left without a chance by Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard has signed out for the grandslam tournament in New York this year.
Against Berrettini, who reached the semi-finals at last years US Open, Roeblev had a difficult start in which he lost his serve early and thus the first set. In the next two sets, 22-year-old Rus quickly took a break lead. Also in the fourth set, Roeblev was stronger and with a love game at 5-3, he served out the game.
Elise Mertens eliminated Sofia Kenin in the eighth finals of the US Open. The Belgian was in two sets the superior of this years winner of the Australian Open: 6-3 6-3.
Mertens also reached the quarter finals at Flushing Meadows last year and reached the semifinals at the Grand Lamb Tournament in Melbourne in 2018. Kenin took the title in Melbourne this year, before the coronavirus messed up the rest of the tennis season. In New York, the 21-year-old American had so far won her matches fairly easily, but against Belgiums number 18 in the world rankings, she didnt really stand out
In the quarter-finals, Mertens takes on Victoria Azarenka from Belarus. The 31-year-old tennis star, who reached the finals of the US Open in 2012 and 2013 and took the title on the same courts in New York a week and a half ago at the WTA tournament in Cincinnati, defeated Czech Karolina Muchova after a long game: 5-7 6-1 6-4.
