Big news from Spain: FC Barcelona is taking out a EUR 525 million loan. This is what the Catalan club announces Sunday night after socios approval.
The mega-borrowed amount, provided by the US bank Goldman Sachs, is used to combat the financial crisis in Camp Nou. It‘s no secret that Barça is in heavy weather. According to club president Joan Laporta, situation is even more serious than expected.
At the Barcelona Members’ Meeting, 588 socios voted for the loan, against 28 counter-voters. Two thirds of the votes were needed to keep the plans going on. The money is planned to be available from August.
“We are all deeply concerned because we have discovered a very high debt and have to work with many parties,” explains Laporta. “Much has to do with the corona crisis, but not everything. There are no excuses,” adds financial director Eduard Romeu.
At the beginning of 2021, the annual report revealed that Barcelona has a debt of over 1.1 billion euros, of which 730 million has to be paid in the short term. The banks have a debt of 266 million euros open. The players would also have a salary credit.
Despite the financial difficulties, Barcelona completed four summer transfers: Memphis Depay followed Eric García, Sergio Agüero and Emerson Royal this weekend. Memphis, García and Agüero did not charge a transfer fee.
