Interim-bond coach Dwight Lodeweges does not shy away from having Owen Wijndal and Perr Schuurs debut in the game with Poland on Friday. “Of course I would dare, otherwise I wouldn’t have selected them,” Lodeweges said at the press conference for the Nations League game.
The deployment of Wijndal and Schuurs seems necessary now that the Dutch national team has the necessary defensive problems. Matthijs de Ligt (shoulder operation) and Daley Blind (heart problems) were already absent, on Thursday, Stefan de Vrij and Denzel Dumfries were added.
De Vrij is injured and Dumfries’ partner is about to give birth. Lodeweges hopes that Dumfries will be able to rejoin the Dutch on Saturday. Monday, there will be another Nations League game with Italy.
“The debutantes made a great impression and I haven’t considered a replacement either,” Lodeweges said. “I looked around and thought, we’ll be fine with this.”
