Feyenoord has benefited optimally from PSVs point loss. In their own house, the Rotterdammers defeated PEC Zwolle with 1-0, and due to the victory Feyenoord PSV has passed the ranking of the Eredivisie.
Dick Lawyers team knew exactly what was at stake in advance. In the event of a victory, the Rotterdammers would benefit from the defeat of PSV and, at least for a while, come up with the leading players Ajax and Vitesse. The Amsterdammers still have a match and will visit FC Twente tomorrow.
In De Kuip, where many seats were covered by Feyenoord supporters with banners to put their team a heart under the belt, both teams started waiting. Feyenoord had a hard time in the first half against the team of John Stegeman, who played very defensively and lurked at the counter.
The few opportunities Feyenoord created for rest did not yield anything. After twenty minutes, Lucas Pratto was close to his first Feyenoord goal. Steven Berghuis laid the ball ready at the second pole, but the Argentine striker lifted the leather with his toe over the target. Not much later De Bear showed himself again. He quickly fired out of the turn, but saw his shot go a few inches next.
Lawyer decided to intervene in peace and brought Ridgeciano Haps and Luis Sinisterra. Mark Diemers and Bryan Linssen stayed behind in the dressing room. This proved to be a good move by the Feyenoord trainer, because Sinisterra broke the spell for the home team twenty minutes after rest. The Colombian got the ball a little happy with it and found the short angle. Shortly before, Pratto once again left a great opportunity unused. On the indication of Jens Toornsta, the striker could head, but he saw how PEC goalkeeper Michael Zetterer worked his commitment to the goal with a good reflex.
A quarter of an hour before the visitors came almost side by side. Immanuel Pherai had the equalizer on his shoe, but the midfielder doubted for too long so Uros Spajic could intervene and keep Feyenoord on his feet.
At Feyenoord the visor will now be full on Sundays race. In the Johan Cruijff ArenA the Classical will be on the programme at 16.45 hrs.
Berghuis critical of team
Berghuis was critical of Feyenoord after the victory. “If you keep playing like this, youre going to tie or lose,” he said. “We shouldnt have that.”
“ We are getting closer and thats good”, Berghuis looked at the ranking. “But we played moderately. The first half was bad. Zwolle pulled us all apart and we came to play in too large spaces,” said the captain at ESPN. “We also played at a much too low pace.”
Berghuis was glad that Sinisterra made the only goal in the 64th minute. “If we play him right, he can make a difference,” said Berghuis. “And he did. Im happy for him. But we have to play better.”
