First coin with the king’s beard on it

For the first time the beard of King Willem-Alexander is on a coin. Until now, the king had no beard on coins. It is a special coin, because it is a commemorative coin.

Commemorative coins are made at special events. This coin was made in honour of the largest, still working steam pumping station in the world: the Woudage pumping station in Friesland. That is why the Frisian flag is also on the coin. The pumping station is 100 years old.

But can you pay with it?

The coin is worth 5 euros. You can pay with it in the supermarket, but the makers don’t think people will.
