The Dutch side won the first game under interim coach Dwight Lodeweges. In an empty Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam, Poland was defeated 1-0 in the Nations League.
It was the first official game for the Dutch Team in 290 days and the first game in the new edition of the Nations League. All earlier scheduled games of 2020 were cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Lodeweges had to puzzle in the back, because of the lack of fixed values Matthijs de Ligt (injury), Daley Blind (heart problems) and Denzel Dumfries (just became a father). Stefan de Vrij also got injured.
The interim coach chose Nathan Aké as the left back, Joël Veltman in the centre next to captain Virgil van Dijk and Hans Hateboer on the right.
Dressed in a new outfit, the Dutch Team went on the attack. It took until just before half time before danger broke out. Memphis Depay cleverly threw the ball over the Polish defense. Frenkie de Jong got it on the chest and shot the ball out of the turn against the post.
It was the culmination of a boring first half, where the best attack came from Poland. Krzysztof Piatek was the final. He forced goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen with a placed shot in the top corner to save with his fists.
After one hour, Steven Bergwijn broke the spell with his first international goal. Frenkie de Jong kept the overview and opened on Hateboer, who managed to put the ball back on the attacker of Tottenham Hotspur: 1-0.

The level of Orange went up a lot after the goal. Memphis Depay had some highs and the combination game also went much smoother, without creating much. In the back, the improvised Dutch defense gave nothing away.
The game with Poland was the first group game in the new edition of the Nations League. Last year, the Netherlands lost the final to Portugal.
Next Monday, Italy will be the next opponent. That match is also in Amsterdam
