Five deaths in New Mexico

Five deaths were killed in a balloon accident in the U.S. state of New Mexico. The air balloon flew against the top of a high voltage cable and then collapsed to the ground.

Four of the occupants were found dead by emergency services. A fifth was taken to the hospital in critical condition, but died there. The accident happened at Albuquerque, the largest city in the state, around 7am local time.

The hot-air balloon fell down on a busy street about thirty meters, and then caught fire. bystanders panicked for fire extinguishers. The balloon cloth floated away and ended up on the roof of a nearby house.

As a result of the accident, 13,000 households were running out of power. A few hours later, the power outage was resolved.

A lot of air balloons are flown in Albuquerque. In October, a nine-day festival of hundreds of hot air balloons will be held annually.

In January, there was also a balloon accident in Albuquerque. A passenger was swinging out of the balloon basket during a hard landing. The man didn‘t survive.

Since 2008, there have been twelve fatal balloons accidents in the US. One of them was an accident with a similar cause to today’s accident. In 2016, a hot air balloon hit a high-voltage cable in Texas. Sixteen deaths were killed. It was the deadliest balloon accident in the US ever.
