The international media has responded mostly positively to ABBAs first new music in almost forty years. Reviewers praise the nostalgic sounds of the first two songs, which were released Thursday night.
BBC music journalist Mark Savage followed the announcement with a mixture of joy and fear but according to him Agnetha Fältskog (71), Anni-Frid Lyngstad (75), Björn Ulvaeus (76) and Benny Andersson (74) have the least messed up with I Still Have Faith In You and Dont Shut Me Down. “In both songs, Benny and Björn avoid the pitfall to redo their childhood. These are songs from their fall years, reminiscing about their lives, loves, triumphs and mistakes.”
Jude Rogers of The Guardian includes the voices of Agnetha and Anni-Frid in her review. “Hearing these two women sing together again after forty years is incredibly touching,” she says. According to her, “the sound of these voices together has always been one of the best things in pop history.” “Of course, theyve changed and aged, but they still carry the weight of each sentence.”
The Independent writes that it feels like ABBA never left. “But how wonderful theyre back there.”
The great Swedish newspapers Expressen and Aftonbladet are also positive about the two new songs. Expressens reviewer Anders Dahlbom speaks of a “truly brilliant comeback.” I Still Have Faith In You he calls the best song, while Dont Shut Me Down reminds him most of the hit The Day Before You Came.
At least Markus Larsson of Aftonbladet doesnt think the comeback is embarrassing. He was a bit afraid of that. He also notices that the voices of Agnetha and Frida still sound great. “Theyre not worn out. Thats something thats often heard by artists who get older.” He likes both songs “OK” and especially Dont Shut Me Down calls a nostalgic song that stands for everything ABBA was good at.
ABBA announced Thursday that the album Voyage will be released in November. The record has a total of ten new songs. In addition, a special concert hall is being built in London where holograms by Agnetha, Anni-Frid, Björn and Benny will perform.
