Forest fire drives hundreds of people from Italian seaside resort

More than 400 people were evacuated from the Italian seaside resort of Campomarino Lido on the Adriatic on Sunday because of a forest fire. Hotels and campsites in the area were also evacuated.

A video that spread the fire brigade shows how thick puffs pull through the streets of the seaside resort and flames threaten a cafe. Social media photos showed fire around houses. The fire brigade tried to fight fire from the air with an extinguisher and helicopter.

In the south of Italy and in the islands of Sicily and Sardinia, forest fires have been raging throughout the week. Drought, high temperatures and strong winds make fires light up easily and are difficult to extinguish. Albania, Greece and Turkey are also facing fires. So far, at least ten people have died: two in Greece and eight in Turkey.
