Former Minister Atzo Nicolaï (VVD) deceased

Oud Minister and former DSM President Atzo Nicolaï (60) has died. At the beginning of this century, on behalf of the VVD, he was State Secretary for European Affairs and Minister for Administrative Renewal and Kingdom Relations under Prime Minister Balkenende
minister Nicolaï was responsible for, among other things, the introduction of the citizen service number and the digital passport for the government DigiD. After that he was a member of the Lower House of Parliament for the VVD for a few years.

After his political career Nicolaï went into business. From 2011 to 2019 he was president of the DSM chemical group in Limburg. There he was involved in, among other things, the establishment of the Chemelot Campus chemical business park.

Ancillary functions

He also had a range of ancillary functions. For example, he was chairman of the supervisory boards of the University of Amsterdam and the Hogeschool van Amsterdam, chairman of Vogelbescherming Nederland, chairman of cultural centre De Balie in Amsterdam and board member of the employers’ organisation VNO-NCW.
