Former national coach Pauw: ‘Was raped by football officer at a young age’

Former national coach Vera Pauw was raped as a player by a senior football official. This is what Pauw wrote in a detailed statement on Twitter on Friday.
This is the most difficult thing in my life. But finally I‘m ready to move on, I’m proud of who I am, Pauw writes in the statement. Two more sexual assaults by two other men followed the sexual assault of the senior football official. All three perpetrators were working in the football world at that time.
For the past 35 years, I‘ve been trying to keep this private. The memories of it control my life. Many people see me as a strong, loud woman who has climbed to the top of the men’s world. But nothing could be further from the truth.
Pauw writes that the KNVB did not want to know about its declarations. After reporting the fifth time, I went to the police. The Dutch media will probably turn against me to tone down my story. I take full responsibility for what I have done and what I failed to do, says Pauw. Currently, Pauw is the national coach of the Irish women‘s national team.
