Sebastian Vettel will ride for the Aston Martin team next year. The arrival of the four-time world champion was already in the air after Sergio Pérez announced his departure from the racing stable, now active under the name Racing Point.
The 33-year-old Vettel is still active for Ferrari at the moment, which means he is going through a dramatic year. The German already announced in May to leave his current employer after this season. “Financial matters did not play a role in this joint decision”, he explained subtly.
He signed with Aston Martin for a year. Vettel becomes a teammate of Lance Stroll.
Given this years results, Vettels move is a huge improvement. So far, Racing Points cars have scored 21 points more than the renowned Italian stable, which celebrates its thousandth F1 race this weekend in the midst of a sporting crisis.
From bad to worse
And also for Vettel personally, the season is going from bad to worse. Twice he didnt even make it to the finish and only in four out of eight races did he make it to the top ten, with a sixth place in Hungary as the best – or rather least bad – result. Salient enough, he was spotted in the car of team boss Otmar Szafnauer of Racing Point.
Vettel, currently number thirteen in the overall classification, finished fifth in 2019. With a victory in Singapore and nine podium finishes in 21 races.
“But his great mission to follow in Ferraris footsteps of his example Michael Schumacher has failed,” says CCeit commentator Louis Dekker about the six years that Vettel has been working for Ferrari without becoming world champion.
