In the fifth stage of the Giro Rosa Marianne Vos won her second day of the Tour. The winner of the second stage was the fastest in the bunch sprint. Annemiek van Vleutens pink jersey was not in danger.
After three arrivals uphill and a team time trial, this time it was up to the sprinters. In the 110 kilometre long stage through the Lazio region, the peloton got two climbs, but they didnt seem tough enough.
Even though CCC – Vos team – had other plans. On the first climb, the long but not steep Madonna della Civita, the team increased the pace and some competitors were dropped.
At twenty kilometres from the finish the number six of the classification Elisa Longo Borghini took off. Borghini had a maximum lead of twenty seconds, but was caught at three kilometres from the finish.
In the bunch sprint Vos rewarded the hard work of her team and won this Giro for the second time. For the 33 year old rider from Brabant it was already the 27th victory in the Italian round that she managed to win in 2011, 2012 and 2014.
“We had a nice plan with the group to make the race hard and to let the group splinter on the climb”, a happy Vos reacted afterwards. Her team leader Jeroen Blijlevens endorsed the tactic and was proud. “Everyone drove full speed and did what they had to do. Then such a victory is doubly beautiful”
Take a look at the reactions of Vos and Blijlevens below.
