Sparta trainer Henk Fraser has‘ paternal ‘advice for midfielder Deroy Duarte. The 21-year-old creative person is a fixture in Fraser‘s team this season, but has doubts about his future at the club.
Sparta would like to extend the contract with the young midfielder, but Duarte himself has doubts. “On the one hand, it is very nice that the club has told me to continue with me. On the other hand, with the European Championships with Jong Oranje ahead, it might also be a moment to look further”, Duarte dubbed in conversation with Algemeen Dagblad.
His trainer has much less doubt and has a clear advice for the midfielder. “If Deroy were my son, I would advise him to sign a new contract today.” Fraser denies saying this for the sake of Sparta. “No, I really see that separate from each other. Look, I didn’t get to Deroy at first. Now it‘s getting better.”
Still, according to Fraser, Duarte is still not ready to play a step higher. “Deroy regularly proves why he is potentially a very good football player. I simply think that Sparta is the place for him where he can take a lot of steps. And if he’s really good, that big club will come.”
