French soldier suspected of espionage for Russia

The French Defence Minister, Florence Parly, says that a senior officer of the French army is suspected of violating security regulations. Parly responded to reports in French media that the officer is suspected of spying for Russia.

According to the French radio station Europe 1, it is suspected that the officer passed on highly secret documents to Russian security services.

“It concerns a man who was on holiday in France when he was arrested a week and a half ago,” says correspondent Frank Renout. “He’s stationed at a military base in Italy and he’s seconded there to NATO.”

“I can confirm that a prosecutor is under investigation for violating security rules,” Parly said. That’s all she wanted to say about it. “It’s up to the prosecution to determine whether he’s guilty or innocent.”
