Frenkie de Jong is reluded by Lionel Messi‘s departure at FC Barcelona. The Dutchman states that it is ‘always tricky when the best player in the world leaves‘ and deals with the stories of who should fill Messi’s shoes.
De Jong doesn‘t have to think long when asked if Messi’s departure influenced the Barcelona selection. “Sure, the best player in the world leaves. For me the best player ever,” he says in front of ESPN‘s camera. “If it leaves after such a long time, it will have a lot of impact on the club. I’m sorry, it‘s special when you’re allowed to play with Messi. In addition, you lose your best player, it gets less qualitatively.”
Despite Messi‘s departure, De Jong has full confidence in a good season with Barcelona. “We still have a really good team, I have a lot of faith in it. But if you lose your best player, it’s always as difficult. I don‘t think anyone can fill their shoes, we shouldn’t compare. I don‘t feel like I have to do a lot of other things through his departure”, De Jong concludes.
