Naomi Osaka signed out for Roland Garros barely a week after winning the US Open. The 22-year-old Japanese tennis star has too much trouble with her left hamstring.
This was already noticeable in New York: her hamstring had been taped throughout the tournament. Yet in the finals she managed to defeat the unseated Victoria Azarenka in three sets and grab her third grand slam title.
Not enough time
“Unfortunately, I cannot end up with Roland Garros,” writes Osaka on social media. “Because my hamstring still hurts, I dont have enough time to prepare for the gravel. There is too little time between the two tournaments.”
Roland Garros starts on 27 September. Due to the increase in the number of corona infections, fewer fans may be present than previously announced.
Initially 11,500 spectators a day were announced, now only 5,000 people are allowed in the stands.
