Pommes Schranke, Pommes Mayo or Pommes pur – the main thing is hot, greasy and from your own oven! During the Corona crisis, the appetite for frozen fries in Germany has increased significantly, according to the market research company Nielsen.
Ran an die Fritten: In the first half of the year, Germans bought a total of 168 million packs of French fries, roasted potatoes, croquettes and Co. This is an increase of around 18 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.
“We are observing a clear corona effect with potato products from the freezer,” says Nielsen trade expert Silke Schmitt. Many Germans not only hoarded toilet paper but also French fries!
Germans bought 97 million packs of frozen French fries
“In the first six months of this year, Germans spent a total of around 247 million euros on frozen potato products. This was around 26 million euros more than in the first half of 2019. Frozen French fries for the oven were particularly popular, with around 97 million packs sold.

But the popularity of potato chips also increased during the Corona period. According to Nielsen, consumers bought a total of over 51,000 tons of potato chips in the first half of the year, around ten percent more than in the same period last year. (miri/dpa)
