Siem de Jong crowned himself a match winner in the cup duel with Feyenoord on Wednesday evening and is now waiting for a piquant reunion in the half final battle. The midfielder strikes Ajax, the club with whom he won four times the country champion.
“ Yes, I know them a bit,” the player of SC Heerenveen laughed in front of the camera of ESPN, which prevented an extension shortly before the end of the regular playing time with a rake headball. “I actually thought Benjamin Nygren was going to shoot himself, so I was ready to cheer.”
Five different feelings
But the Swede pulled the ball before and De Jong headed falling hit. “I have had five different feelings in this competition,” said the match winner. “We don‘t start strong, but we still get ahead. Then after rest we leave the dressing room badly and suddenly we are 3-1 behind. Then you think it’s done.”
However, the red card for Steven Berghuis halfway through the second half brought back hope in the Frisian hearts. “We got a little more energy, make the connection hit ten minutes before time and suddenly everything goes well”, laughs De Jong, who of course looks forward to meeting his former employer, with a place in the cup final. “It‘s gonna be a nice pot.”
SC Heerenveen-trainer Johnny Jansen couldn’t remember that he had experienced a crazier match. “After the 1-3 we lost it completely. In the phase after Joey Veerman misses the penalty (at 1-1, red.) we have nothing to say at all. But with a man more and at 2-3 you know that in the final phase very crazy things can happen. That it will still be 4-3 is very special.”
