GP Spain: Verstappen starts from third spot, 92nd pole for Hamilton

Max Verstappen will start Sunday at the Grand Prix of Spain from third place. Pole position is there for Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton, his teammate Valtteri Bottas will start second.

Steps effortlessly went through the first two qualifying sessions as expected and Bottas and Hamilton were the first to set a serious time in the third and decisive session. The Dutchman followed 0.708 seconds.

With their last attempt the top three were not shaken anymore and Hamilton could be congratulated with the 92nd pole position of his career.

opportunities for Steps

“This is the maximum right now” said Verstappen after qualifying. “We’ve been in third place all weekend”, also aiming for practice. “I hope we can get a little closer in the race.”

Formula 1 reporter Louis Dekker is of the opinion that this should succeed. “I expect that the speed of Verstappen will be enough to make it another exciting race”, he says. “The long sessions during the free practice sessions have shown that.”

Free training

At the third free practice session earlier in the day, Verstappen had also set the third time.

The driver of Red Bull, who also clocked the third fastest time in the first two free practice sessions on Friday, was half a second slower than the Mercedessen on Saturday morning.

In an otherwise quiet free practice, where the drivers drove significantly fewer laps than on Friday, Hamilton clocked the fastest time, teammate Bottas the second.

Same as on Friday it was warm at the Barcelona circuit and that again gave the teams a lot of information about the wear and tear of the tyres and the strategy to be followed in tomorrow’s race.

Ocon in the wall

The free practice ended in a strange way. Just before the flag fell, Renault driver Esteban Ocon flew his car into the wall. The Frenchman had to swerve for Kevin Magnussen (Haas) and was unable to keep his car on the track.

chances were that Ocon had to miss qualifying, but his team managed to repair his car in time. It gave him the fifteenth time.
