Great tit: nothing to do on Booking.com, Room furious about bonuses

Theres nothing to do about paying 28 million euros in bonuses by Booking.com, says demissionary Secretary of Great Tit of Social Affairs. โ€œIts not a beautiful image,โ€ he says. โ€œLegally, its right, so its possible. But Im not going to defend it.โ€

Today, NRC reported on the basis of documents before the shareholders meeting that the company gives three top directors bonuses over the past corona year in the form of shares. Theyll be paid out in the future for what theyre worth.

Booking.com, which is a US parent company, received 65 million euros in the first round of the NOW wage support. This already arose a fuss, because the publicly traded company made a profit of 5 billion dollars a year earlier and had more than 12 billion dollars in cash.

According to Koolmees, Dutch wage support has saved jobs in the Netherlands. โ€œIn the first phase of the coronacrisis, this company suffered a significant blow in turnover,โ€ says the Minister. โ€œThere was a real risk that jobs would be cut and wages would not be paid.โ€

Second Chamber furious

Parties in the House of Representatives are furious at the company. โ€œIts more wrong than wrong. Its vulture behaviour,โ€ said VVD MP Aartsen on NPO Radio 1. โ€œI would like to reclaim it, but unfortunately I cant.โ€

He suggests not booking hotel rooms via Booking anymore but directly with the hotels. โ€œThen these entrepreneurs will also have more left to it,โ€ says Aartsen.

Denk leader Azarkan also calls for a boycott of the company and speaks of perverted graying behaviour. โ€œBooking cant get away with this,โ€ says SP MP Van Kent. โ€œThat money has to be recovered up to the last penny,โ€ says Ploumen.

Wednesday there will be a Chamber debate on the corona measures where the Booking bonuses will be discussed. This may happen earlier in Question Time on Tuesday.

After the fuss over the first round of Now support, the company abandoned it in later rounds. In the first round, the condition was not yet imposed that companies that received NOW may not pay bonuses. That didnt come until the next rounds.

The holiday platform had a bad year due to Corona. Almost 60% fewer overnight stays were booked, the company itself had to borrow more than 3 billion euros and nearly a quarter of the 26,000 jobs.

Topman Fogel earlier said that it would be โ€œinappropriateโ€ to earn a lot now. He waived his fixed salary for 2020, while other directors paid 20 percent of their salary for over half a year.
