It looks like Robin Gosens will never wear the Orange shirt. The midfielder of Atalanta Bergamo, who has both Dutch and German nationality, has been included in the German squad for the upcoming soccer internationals against Spain and Switzerland.
Gosens was born in Emmerik, just across the border near ‘s-Heerenberg, as the son of a Dutch father and German mother, and played in the Netherlands for Vitesse, FC Dordrecht and Heracles Almelo before making the move to northern Italy in 2017.
At the start of this year he let it be known that he had not yet made a choice, nor had he had any contact with Oranje-bond coach Ronald Koeman or his German colleague Joachim Löw. The Italian sports newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport nevertheless reported that Gosens would receive an invitation for the interland of Germany against Italy.
In the end, the corona crisis didn’t happen. In September, however, Germany plays in the Nations League against Spain (3 September) and Switzerland (6 September) and Gosens, who had a successful season with Atalanta, can still make his debut for ‘Die Mannschaft’. In that case, a performance in the Dutch national team is definitively out of the question.
