Heerenveen empty-handed: ‘Maybe we had too much respect for Ajax’

SC Heerenveen gave Ajax an awkward Saturday night, but was empty-handed afterwards. Captain Tibor Halilovic regretted that the Frisians may have thrown away the trepidation too late.
Ajax reached a 0-1 lead after 24 minutes and had to regularly add all the sails in the back. โ€œMaybe we hit the field with too much respect,โ€ said Halilovic in a conversation with ESPN afterwards. โ€œWe let them play football a little too easy. After getting the first goal against, we picked it up better, especially in the first half.โ€
Ajax had to switch four base players after the extended international period. The suggestion that Heerenveen should smell blood just the battered guests from Amsterdam is put aside by Halilovic. โ€œThey have more good players, so we didnt want to think that way. We just primed ourselves as well as we can.โ€
