‘Heracles wanted to close abroad, now they have to play after competition’

Excelsior has a good feeling about the diptych with Heracles Almelo in the playoffs to promote to the Premier League. Trainer Marinus Dijkhuizen and midfielder Reuven Niemeijer of the Kralingers see that things are rumbling in Almelo.
Excelsior will play against Heracles at home on Wednesday. Three days later, the return. “The pressure lies with Heracles, that is clear when you play against such a team,” says Dijkhuizen to RTV Rijnmond. “I think theyve been playing in the Eredivisie for seventeen seasons and now they suddenly have to play after competition. I think they wanted to end the season together abroad. Now they have to go to a packed Woudestein. Of course, we also want to, but with us it is mainly healthy tension.”
Dijkhuizen knows better than anyone what it
s like to promote to the Eredivisie. In 2014, he ended the post-competition winning with Excelsior. “I showed the promotional video from eight years ago, when I promoted to the Premier League with Excelsior. We now have the opportunity to promote again and you dont get such an opportunity every season. A lot of guys have never experienced this before. So I also shared my own experience as a player and trainer with the boys.”
Niemeijer also sees that it is restless at Heracles, where he played for four years. “It
s quite chaotic there, no one had taken this into account. I can imagine this is a big hit for them. The pressure on Heracles is high and we want to benefit from that. We have a good flow. Its nice to measure whether we can handle this level as well.”
