Hiddink on adventure again: national coach and technical director of Curacao

Hedwiges Maduro will also be involved in the team. Due to obligations in the Netherlands, the eighteen-time former international will first have a role as advisor, but in time he will have to take on the role of coach. Hiddink would then have his hands free as technical director.

“It may not be obvious, but it was difficult to say ‘no'”, the brand new national coach of Curacao explains his choice to Fox Sports. “Curacao has made good strides in recent years and I would like to help the players and staff move up the international ladder

Sturdy plough

Hiddink wants to come up with as strong a team as possible. Eredivisie players with parents from Curaçao can expect an invitation. For example, Quinten and Jurriën Timber and Sontje Hansen of Ajax and Tahith Chong, who was recently leased by Manchester United to Werder Bremen

At Curaçao, former league players include Eloy Room, Leandro Bacuno and Brandley Kuwas.

“I want to find out who’s available. Of course it’s always nice to play soccer in a national team”, said Hiddink, who until September 2019 was still the national coach of China under 23, but was sent away due to disappointing results.

In December 2019, until the coronavirus broke out in the Netherlands and the competitions were shut down, Hiddink went to work as an advisor to the then wandering PSV. Earlier he was at the helm of the Orange, Turkey, Russia, Australia and South Korea.

The national team is working harder and harder: in 2017 the Caribbean Cup was conquered and the team also managed to qualify for the Gold Cup, the North American equivalent of the European Championship. In 2019, Curaçao reached the quarter-finals of the tournament.
