Honda: ‘We want to conquer the world title this year’

Honda wants to supply Max Verstappen with a motorcycle for the upcoming season to become the Dutch World Champion in Formula 1.

That says technical director Toyoharu Tanabe of the Japanese company. Honda enters its final year of collaboration with Red Bull, the racing stable of Verstappen.

โ€œ Even better

โ€œAt the end of this year, our cooperation with Red Bull and AlphaTauri will end and we will withdraw from Formula One, but our ambition remains intact; we want to conquer the world title,โ€ says Tanabe. โ€œWe have a relatively short break this year, but we are working hard on an engine that will perform even better.โ€

Verstappen won two Grand Prixs last year and was often on stage, but his Red Bull couldnt compete with the fast Mercedes. The Dutchman also fell out a number of times. โ€œWe are now developing the power source for 2021, both for better performance and reliability. Of course, the other teams are not sitting still and we also know that our position is still behind Mercedess, but we really want to win more races and compete for the championship,โ€ said the Honda boss.

According to Tanabe, the Red Bull last season was quite reliable. โ€œWe had learned a lot from the previous seasons and it was certainly positive that last year we used exactly the three bikes allowed per driver, thus avoiding gridpunishments.โ€
