Imsufficient for De Jong after not claiming penalty: ‘Irrelevant, becomes a habit’

FC Barcelona has symbolically concluded one of the least successful calendar years in club history. In the last game of 2020, it did not go beyond 1-1 against the modest Eibar. Frenkie de Jong couldnt make a difference in Camp Nou either. What did the Spanish newspapers think of the Orange-International? Football scoop makes a round along the fields.

At least El Desmarque wasnt convinced. Goalscorer Ousmane Dembélé got a 9, but other than that they were not exactly skitful with enough: De Jong was able to write a 4, just like trainer Ronald Koeman. Intrascendent (irrelevant, red.) And thats starting to become a habit, was the concise commentary of the medium.
Diario SPORT agreed with this. The sports newspaper handed out a 5 and gave a slightly longer argumentation.
The Dutchman was played excellently by the players of Eibar and therefore could not make too much contributions. Nevertheless, in the second half he got an imposed scoring chance, but his shot was too weak and rolled directly into Marko Dmitrovics gloves.

Marcas criticism — which did not give out figures — was somewhat more constructive. Nevertheless, the Madrid sports newspaper was not convinced either. The Dutchman at times combined well with left-back Júnior Firpo. But he was visibly not at ease against Eibar. Not as decisive as he was earlier this season.
Mundo Deportivo also did not give any numbers and typed De Jongs game as serio , solid. He tried to play the ball between the lines, but he did not always manage to find a receiver among all the massively defensive opponents. Furthermore, he didnt have much big contributions, but De Jong delivered a decent competition.
De Jong finally received a 5 from El Periódico. The Catalan newspaper focused on an action he was not involved in: the penalty that Martin Braithwaite asked for in the competition was missed. El Periódico was astonishing to take the penalty — in the absence of Lionel Messi — at all.
The Dane was picked up almost a year ago at Leganés, a club that relegated a little later. He is honest and always works hard, but symbolizes everything that is wrong with todays Barcelona. Braithwaite claimed the penalty and missed. Griezmann, De Jong, Pjanic: they stood there and they looked at it. And Barça tormented himself, not for the first time this year.
