The Ajax Women did not get further than a draw against Arsenal in the UEFA Women‘s Champions League on Tuesday evening. In London, it was 2-2 after an exciting game. Top striker Vivianne Miedema failed to score.
At Meadow Park, Sarina Wiegman and Daphne Koster, among others, were attentive to the game. With the home team, Miedema started from the kick-off as the deepest striker. At Ajax, among others, Sherida Spitse was captain in the basic eleven. At Arsenal, besides Miedema, there was no Dutch input in the selection.
In the first half, the Ajax Women immediately put pressure and showed that they wanted to win on English soil. It was therefore the Amsterdammers who made the first goal. Roméé Leuchter shot an assist from Chasity Grant in the English goal. But not soon after the opening goal, Arsenal came alongside again. The Swedish Stina Blackstenius received the equaliser.
After the break, the Arsenal was looking for the lead. In the 55th minute, this nightmare also became a reality for Ajax, when the Londoners receive a penalty kick. Kim Little unwrapped the gift and put Arsenal ahead. The Ajax Women did everything they could to shoot in the equaliser and that goal eventually also came in the final phase. In the 83rd minute, it was Leuchter again. She was allowed to make her second of the evening and thus decided the final score at 2-2, so that the return in Amsterdam must show who can advance to the main tournament
