Several countries have pledged rapid aid to India, which is suffering from an unprecedented wave of coronavirus infections caused by a mutated variant of the virus. The European Union, the United Kingdom and the United States are sending medical supplies to the country where 300 000 new coronavirus infections have been detected every day in the last four days.
President Von der Leyen of the European Commission wants to bring oxygen and medicines to India as soon as possible. “We are ready to help,” she wrote on Twitter. The British Foreign Minister Raab sends over 600 oxygen machines to India. The first delivery from London arrives in New Delhi on Tuesday.
“ Indispensable medical devices, including hundreds of oxygen concentrators and respiration machines, are now on their way from the UK to prevent the tragic loss of lives caused by this terrible virus,” says British Prime Minister Johnson in a statement.
America announced to send “immediately” tools to India, including raw materials for coronavaccins. And the Élysée announced that France is sending oxygen supplies to India on its own initiative. Neighbouring country and archenemy Pakistan has also offered medical supplies. It is not clear whether that offer has been accepted.
Neighbouring Bangladesh will close the border with India tomorrow to stop the advance of the virus.
