Irene Schouten wins three kilometers at European Championships

Irene Schouten wrote the three kilometers to her name at the European Championships all-round skates. With a razor-sharp 3.57.95, she trumped everyone.

Antoinette de Jong took the lead in the ranking after the first day at the European Championships all-round in Heerenveen. However, the title holder lost quite a part of her head start over Schouten on the 3000 meter. De Jong finished third in 4,02,19 minutes.

Marathon skater Schouten did not let herself go crazy because of the quick start of her opponent Voronina and rode her own race. In the final round, Team Zaanlanders strong leader still took away from the world champion in the 5000 meters. Schouten ended up driving in Thialf in the third time. She finished at the end of December in Heerenveen in optimal conditions, with low air pressure, in 3.57.87.

In the intermediate position after two distances De Jong leads at number 2 Schouten with a margin of 0.79 seconds. The Russin Natalia Voronina, who placed the second time on the 3000 meters (3,58.62), has to make up for 1.28 seconds on Sunday at the 1500 meter. Joy Beune ranks sixth in the overall ranking, at 3.17 of De Jong. The EK debutante rode on the 3000 meters the fifth time: 4.03,18.
