Italian ambassador killed in attack on UN convoy Congo

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Italian ambassador Luca Attanasio, an Italian police officer and their Congolese driver were killed. They traveled along in a UN convoy when attackers opened fire on the motorcade this morning.

According to local authorities, the attackers wanted to kidnap UN personnel. There was shooting over and over again. The attackers shot at the ambassador and the agent, said a governor. 43-year-old Attanasio succumbed to gunshot wounds to his abdomen. Other members of the convoy were taken wounded to the hospital.

The attack was just after 10:00 a.m. local time in the Virunga National Park, in the east of the African country.

The government in the Congo accuses Hutu rebels from neighboring Rwanda of the murders. In recent years, rebels have regularly committed attacks on aid workers in the Congo. For example, in 2019 some Ebola aid workers from the World Health Organisation (WHO) were killed.
