Jeroen van Merwijk cancels performances after relapse due to illness

Jeroen van Merwijk (65), who announced in February that he has colorectal cancer, announces on Wednesday evening that he has to cancel his performances because he has been struggling with ‘a big relapse since last month.

On Facebook, the 65-year-old cabaret performer does his story. As many of you know, I was diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer in February. That was after the impresario De Mannen had managed to organise a wonderful new playlist for me for this season for the Old Years with the ominous title, it’s a gift, we’ll do it again this year’, he starts his story.

Although it looked bad for me at first, the treatment methods of the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek hospital turned out to be unexpectedly good. So good, in fact, that the tumours began to shrink and my blood values improved dramatically. I was therefore convinced that, with some good will and perseverance, I should be able to complete the tour of 60 performances in 5 months, he adds.

Although he seemed to be doing a bit better, at the moment he says he is too weak to continue his tour. However, I had a major setback last month. Although I am recovering a bit, with a strict diet and a very austere lifestyle, that relapse has made a few things clear to me. One of those things is that I can’t expect to be able to complete my theatre tour

At the moment I am too weak and have too little energy to cope with the physical and mental fatigue of such an effort. It was with pain in my heart that I had to decide to cancel all the performances for next season, says van Merwijk. Yet the cabaret performer has not given up hope yet. Who knows, maybe one day I will have a spectacular comeback in the future, like Herman Finkers.

In the eighties and nineties Van Merwijk worked on radio programmes such as Rauhfaser, Krachtvoer and Spijkers met Koppen. He is known from theatre programmes such as Er zijn nog kaarten (There are still tickets), Van Merwijk explains it one more time and I‘m glad I’m not myself. In 2015 he was on stage together with Harrie Jekkers, who made his comeback with the duo performance after fifteen years.
