Nicolò Zaniolo suffered a serious injury to his left knee on Monday at the game with the Netherlands. The midfielder of AS Roma has been on the sidelines for at least six months due to a torn cross band.
Zaniolo had just recovered from the same injury to his other knee, which he had sustained in January. After the coronastop he successfully made his comeback in the Serie A, with a place in the Italian selection of national coach Roberto Mancini as a reward.
The 21-year-old Zaniolo is regarded as one of the faces that provides the Italian team with new impetus. Against the Netherlands he was almost successful in the opening phase with a stylish fuss.
Around the 40th minute Zaniolo collided with Donny van de Beek and got injured
Two years ago Zaniolo was used as a kind of change in the transfer of the (beaten) Belgian Radja Nainggolan from Roma to Inter, but in a short time became extremely popular in the capital.
Interest from top European clubs even increased its estimated market value to over fifty million euros a year later, but Zaniolo eventually signed a much improved contract with the club where Rick Karsdorp and Justin Kluivert are also on the payroll.
Because of his ‘outstanding performance as an athlete’ Zaniolo received a Bible from Pope Francis at the beginning of this year.
