Kandahar Mosque Attack: Death Toll Rises to 37

An explosion in a Shiite mosque in Afghanistan‘s southern Kandahar city of Kandahar has killed at least 37 people and 70 injured, Reuters news agency reports. The number of deaths and injuries is expected to continue to increase. The attack hasn’t been claimed yet.

At the time of the explosion, Friday prayer was held at the Imam Bargah Mosque. Photos and videos on social media show many people who are ostensibly dead or seriously injured on the mosque floor.

A local reporter tells Reuters that eyewitnesses saw three suicide bombers. One of them blew himself up at the entrance to the mosque, the two others did so in the building. โ€œThe condition is very serious. The hospital is calling on people to donate blood,โ€ said the reporter.

Second attack in a short time

This attack comes a week after an Islamic State claimed suicide bombing at a Shiite mosque in the northern city of Kunduz. There were 46 people killed here.

The embassy of predominantly Shiite Iran in Afghanistan has condemned the attack. โ€œWe hope Taliban leaders are vigorously fighting these ungodly terrorist attacks.โ€

The Taliban themselves are Sunni but have said to protect all ethnic minorities and faith groups, for example from the local IS branch.
